A Beginner’s Guide to Homemade Sourdough

in the midst of the 2020 COVID-19 global pandemic:

families across the globe turned to artisanal hobbies, both as a pass time and to maintain positive mental health. The story was no different for Canadian-Italian artist: Jen Leo.

Living abroad in Italy, Jen is no stranger to crafting meals from fresh and simple ingredients - it's a natural component of the European culture and lifestyle.

In common with many others, the pandemic hit hard for Jen. If being a world away from family and friends wasn't challenging enough, making a living that generally thrived from - what rapidly became a fading - tourism industry meant she had no choice but to be resilient.

While in lockdown, Jen maintained her creative spark by moving from canvas to countertop; investing time and energy into mastering the art of sourdough.

Uncovering the ultimate stress reliever, Jen was able to maintain the peace and confidence required to keep her business thriving online, Her story truly embodies the epitome of strength, courage, perseverance and success through challenging, difficult, and uncertain times.

Understanding the power of mindfulness over a person's physical health and mental wellbeing, sharing this story and gift with others was a must for Toronto-based Registered Holistic Nutritionist: Julie Rosanne Nancy.

The delicate and artisanal techniques required to make sourdough is a reflection of the greatest lessons learned and skills developed throughout the  year 2020; including patience, attention and nourishment.

Being mainly crafted using wild (naturally fermented) yeast, readers can expect variance in their results. A method that works for one person may not work for another and a method that works one time may completely fail later. This is the beauty of the process and life lessons and skills developed from it. There's no wonder sourdough has been long researched and, to this day, continues to remain a wonder even to the experts.

As you navigate the process, remind yourself  this is a learning opportunity that is unique to you - and far beyond simply learning how to make sourdough bread itself.
